Looking back at the YIS 09 Dec 2022

General December 2022

Young Investigators Symposium; on bright ideas, big data and tiny living things.

This year the Young Investigators Symposium (YIS), organized by the Young Investigators Board (YIB) was held on the 9th of December in hotel Casa, Amsterdam. We had three wonderful speakers. The program started with a presentation by Dr. Ralph Stadhouders about group 2 innate lymphoid cells in respiratory diseases, followed by Prof. Dr. Hermelijn Smits discussing how parasites infections influence the immune system and allergic disease development. Prof. Dr. Debby Bogaert gave a beautiful overview on the human lung microbiome and its influence on respiratory infections.

After that, we continued with the network activity: small bricks, smart ideas. Beautiful things were build with Lego in a short time, showing the enormous creativity of our young investigators. After the lunch, there were three masterclasses guided by the keynote speakers and a YIB-member, where early stage PhD-students had the opportunity to practice presenting and discussing their data. Parallel there was a workshop for the more senior PhD-students and Postdoc how to “fail your way forward”.

The day ended by awarding the NRS Swierenga Thesis award, won by Mahmoud I.A. Ibrahim, the SAB best paper award, won by Esmee van der ploeg and NRS Masterclass award, won by Sharyn Roodenburg. Lastly, the Susanne handed over the baton to Maaike, who will be chair of the YIB in 2023. We would like to thank Susanne for all the effort she put into the YIB and which Maaike all the best for the coming year. In addition, we would like to thank all the participants for making the YIS to a great success. We hope to see you all again next year!
