Young Investigator Symposium

The YIS is tailored for young researchers, including PhD students, post-docs, and trainee physicians, who are engaged in lung disease research in the Netherlands. This event offers them the chance to establish and expand their professional connections within the country, enhance their presentation skills, engage in data discussions, and gain inspiration from seminars presented by distinguished national and international experts in the field of lung diseases. Naturally, early-career Principal Investigators who have an interest in the symposium are warmly encouraged to participate. The NRS Young Investigator Symposium is generously supported by the Stichting Asthma Bestrijding.

Recap of the YIS 2023

This year the Young Investigators Symposium (YIS), with the theme “Mind, Body and Lungs” was organized by the Young Investigators Board (YIB), held on the 24th of November in hotel Casa, Amsterdam. We had two excellent speakers. The program started with a presentation by Dr. Saskia Braber, Utrecht University, on non-digestible oligoscaaharides: A novel treatment for respiratory infections. This was followed by the presentation of Dr. Simon Jochems entitled, “The Nose: where Mind, Body and Lungs meet”.
We continued with the network activity with legos with the theme on balancing act. In a short span of time, the young investigators showed enormous creativity. After lunch, there were three masterclasses guided by the keynote speakers and a YIB-member, where early stage PhD-students had the opportunity to discuss their research and enhance their presentation skills. In parallel, there was a workshop for the more senior PhD-students and Postdocs on “Zen and mindfulness”.
The day ended by awarding the NRS Swierenga Thesis award, won by Dr. Xue Manz; the SAB best paper award, won by Dr. Xinhui Wu and NRS Masterclass award, won by Suzanne Kroes. Lastly, our chair Dr. Maaike Scheenstra handed over the baton to Dr. Mieke Metzemaekers, who will be chair of the YIB in 2024.
A big thank you to all the participants for making the YIS to a great success. We hope to see you all again next year! Photos of the day can be found below.
